Apple really sucks, but they're honestly kind of DAW-esome.

I believe GarageBand is currently the best free digital audio workstation that exists (REAPER doesn't count since it nags you about licensing). Many people argue that the high cost of a Mac counteracts this, but I beg to differ. The platform of a DAW shouldn't affect its pros and cons (see: SONAR). Besides, I don't even own a real Mac; I made two Hackintoshes.

Before I stopped using smartphones, being able to record vocals on my iPhone and have them in a GarageBand project in under a minute was beyond convenient. Once you've actually gotten a project going, it feels more or less like a slightly slipped down version of Logic; the keyword there is "slightly". For having such seamless integration with iOS and costing zero dollars, GarageBand is extremely robust. I especially like being able to export to 24-bit WAV; that's very handy, and I'm sure all seven people who export their music in AIFF are fond of the support GarageBand offers them.
